We caught up with Ruta and Ania, two women in Zarion who are proud of working in the software industry. Read on to find out more...

Ruta Ramanauskaite, Software Developer 2 years at Zarion Software

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO BECOMING A SOFTWARE DEVELOPER?

What attracted me to software development is that the work is creative and challenging. It’s like building logical blocks, a bit like building blocks of Lego, which keeps the work very interesting. Also, the variety of work that a developer can do anything from front-end development to back-end development along with a spectrum of technologies and languages always keeps me learning.

I.T. HAS HISTORICALLY BEEN A MALE-DOMINATED FIELD. COULD YOU PROVIDE INSIGHT IN WHAT HAS YOUR JOURNEY BEEN LIKE? HAS EFFECTS OF THIS BEEN FELT IN YOUR CAREER? WHAT DO YOU THINK INSPIRES WOMAN TO JOIN THE TECH INDUSTRY?

My journey to becoming a software developer has been majorly based on things I wanted to achieve. I had an idea for a product that I had while in college and so I decided to re-qualify and go back to college so I could make my idea a reality. Through this, I discovered a passion and enjoyment for writing code. Through my time as a software developer I have had an enviable amount of fantastic mentors who are men and women. Neither one of them paid any attention to what gender or what experience I have had, but instead focused on guiding me and devoting time and effort to sit with me and solve problems hand in hand.

I think Ireland is very much forward-looking because of programs that motivate kids and adults to learn software development. Coder Dojo, where I volunteered for a bit is a fantastic free resource for kids of various ages to attend and to learn various subjects from HTML to robotics. Also, free courses that are available for adults to re-skill and to move into the IT sector. This is motivating and encouraging women from young age to choose a career in IT and I have seen this first hand.

HAVE YOU GOT A FEMALE ROLE MODEL IN TECH INDUSTRY THAT YOU LOOK UP TO?

Yes, other than the wonderful women I work around that are knowledgeable and inspiring, I am much inspired by renowned software developer and a mathematician Hannah Fry.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO A WOMAN WHO WANTS TO BECOME A DEVELOPER?

Software development may seem like a tough field to join, however it’s only a matter of perseverance. It’s an understanding that will come with time and experience. So my advice, is not to be afraid to embark on that journey, to tackle it head on, because at the end of it awaits a rewarding and challenging career.

Ania Sherlock, Content Marketing Specialist 16 months at Zarion Software

WHAT ATTRACTED YOU TO WORK FOR A SOFTWARE COMPANY?

Software is where I started my career journey. Fresh out of college, I landed a job as a Junior Copywriter in a global software company. From there, my love for technology grew. I really enjoy researching and writing about the latest trends and breaking down difficult technological concepts into an interesting piece of content. At one stage, I stepped out of the software industry, but found myself yearning for it again and quickly returned – which is how I found Zarion Software. The technology world moves very fast, and this fast pace is reflected in any culture of a software company - it’s something I’ve grown to love.

HAVE YOU GOT A FEMALE ROLE MODEL IN TECH INDUSTRY THAT YOU LOOK UP TO?

I’m so lucky to have worked with so many intelligent, empowering and supportive women. They are the ones who have truly shaped me and helped me grow as a women in the workplace. On a wider scale, my female role model in tech would have to be Joanna Hoffman – best known as Steve Jobs’ right hand woman. She has an impressive past, moving from Poland, learning English, succeeding in her studies to eventually working with a genius of our generation. She is known as one of the only people who could “knock some sense into Steve.”

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE TO A WOMAN CONSIDERING A MOVE TO THE SOFTWARE INDUSTRY?

From my perspective as a marketer, it makes my day job so much easier when I am marketing a product that I believe in and that can make real change in the world. If you like to work with the latest and greatest technology that has the power to change people’s lives – then a software company is a great choice. Go for it!!
